Jumping the Shark 19 Times

I know this is a bit early to be posting on this blog, but there is a movie I just have to talk about. Yup, I'm sure all of you who understand my love for the Resident Evil movies saw this coming, but I need to talk about Jaws 19.

Quick Side Note

I added a Movie Recommendations list to the side of the blog. This is a list of movies I think many people won't watch because the seem a little too strange to watch without a recommendation. These may necessarily be good movies, but they certainly are interesting and...well I enjoy them any way.

Drag Me To Hell and Skeptical Douche Bags

Wow, it has been a looooong time since I last posted on this blog but what the heck I just had a great idea for a blog post and I have the time so here we go. It's probably no real secret that horror movie characters aren't particularly well written or interesting characters. Being honest, most of them are douche bags.

Darkman: or Why Sam Raimi is Awesome.

I have been a fan of Sam Raimi's work ever since I was introduced to the original Evil Dead movies (also probably the source of my adoration of horror movies). So naturally I've since tracked down as many Raimi films as I could. It was only recently, last night in fact, that I saw Darkman (1990). It was quite simply awesome.

The Case For Bathroom Breaks

137 of the 193 movies in my collection are greater then 100 minutes (an hour 40) totaling 70% of all the movies I own. this same percentage seems to be about right for the main Hollywood film industry too (at the very least the big summer movies). So why don't movies have intermissions any more?

Why I Love VHS

As a fan of the sci-fi aesthetic of the 80's I have been following the production of Kung Fury, a crowd funded 30 minute 80's style sci-fi-cop-martial arts-fantasy film. however, despite the movie being released on youtube yesterday (here)...I haven't seen it yet. This is because I want to copy it to a VHS tape first. However for all of you who aren't as in love with the VHS format as I am...whats wrong with you. Here are 5 reasons VHS is better then DVD.

A Sordid Affair

I have not been faithful recently. For about 6 or 7 years I have pledged myself to one, and this past week I betrayed that pledge. This was not just once, but 3 times I have rejected the one to whom I've pledged my devotion. Before I expound upon my sins I must first apologies to the one I have wronged: I am so sorry Godzilla for I have seen and enjoyed 3 Gamera movies.

Zero Must Equal One Hundred Percent

Ever since I first saw Brazil (1985) two or three years ago I have been a HUGE Terry Gilliam fan. It didn't take me long at all to watch Time Bandits (1981), 12 Monkies (1995), and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998). So back in 2013 when I heard of The Zero Theorem I was naturally very excited. A brand new Terry Gilliam movie that critics were comparing to my favorite Gilliam movie Brazil? Sign me up! Of course being the small, low budget movie that it was I couldn't see it until I bought it digitally through VHX. After finishing the movie I was quite taken aback by just how the movie did not meet expectations.

Whether it is in a word or in a look you can't get rid of THE BABADOOK

Once in a blue Moon comes a movie that’s not only shatters genre conventions, also causes you to rethink the entire genre.  Last year one such movie was released, however, as it was a foreign film did not receive the due attention it deserved: The Babadook.

Genre of Hidden Gems Pt.4 Well Done, but Underrated.

Now to finish off my overdue theme week I’d like to talk about what I think is the absolute best video game based movie. It’s not the best representation of the game’s lore, or characters, but it absolutely nails the look and feel of the games while delivering a compelling enough story. This movie is the criminally underrated Silent Hill.

The Genre of Hidden Gems Pt. 3 The Ultimate Guilty Pleasure

This post and the next one were intended to be written for the last two weeks in March, but I got lazy and never wrote them, so here I am now playing catch up for the past two weeks the next post (which is also the last of my video game movie set) will probably be posted later tonight or tomorrow. Enjoy your double post week.

Genre of Hidden Gems Pt. 2 Missed Opportunities

The movie for this week I picked, not because I think it is good, but because I care deeply about the videogame franchise that it’s a part of. As far back as I remember I have played PC videogames, and, as I was born in the 90’s, they were DOS games (look it up all you less than 20 somethings); the earliest I can remember are mostly edutainment games, and are generally not very interesting. The earliest DOS games that I remember, that weren’t trying to teach me how to read, think or do math are: Lemmings, and Wing Commander.

Genre of Hidden Gems Pt. 1 Underrated Adventures

Today marks the beginning of my first and probably not last Theme Month. Just to shake things up around here and keep me interested I’m going to spend an entire month on a misunderstood subset of movies. Before we begin I want to make it clear that I am 100% serious with this I really do like these movies, but I totally understand most of the hate for them, so here we go.

Disney's Live-Action Winnie The Pooh & F*ck You Too

I agree with this.

The Fun of Watching A Jerk's Life Fall Apart

Valentine’s day is a day to celebrate love, but I don’t feel much like celebrating. I personally have never been in a romantic relationship and this doesn’t seem likely to change in the near future. So instead of talking about some cheesy rom com, or melodramatic romance drama I’m going to talk about the exact opposite:

Poltergeist is Funny No Really I'm Serious

I am on a personal vendetta regarding a specific 1980’s horror movie, and I wasn’t going to discuss it this week but of course a recent trailer release for a certain reboot forced my hand. So let’s talk about Poltergeist.

The Exorcist and Catholocism

Before I start i’d like to mention this was initially written as and extra credit assignment for one of my classes, but it has been significantly shortened and rewritten to be far more informal. just thought y’all ought to know.

It’s no secret that the movie The Exorcist is steeped in catholic symbolism. It’s a movie about a young girl, Regan, who gets possessed by a demon, and a priest, Damien, who tries to exorcise the demon. However I never really watched the movie myself in that context so I watched it again and kept notes on the obvious catholic symbolism. Here’s the most interesting stuff I found:

A Different Kind of Movie

This week I wanted to do something a little different on this blog, mostly in preparation for my first theme month…but ill clue you all in on that when we get there. Today I want to talk about interactive cinema.

Why I Hate The Hobbit

So what I want to discuss this week is the ending of a worldwide cinematic phenomenon: The Lord of the Rings. As I’m sure just about everyone who hasn’t been living under the biggest of boulders is aware, just last year the last of The Hobbit trilogy was released, but I have not gotten around to actually watching the last movie until the week before last so I have refrained from talking about this franchise in a written capacity until now.

The Japanese, Advertising, and the Kitchen Sink

The movie I want to talk about this week is a bit of an old one, definitely born of a different time. A time before the film industry became what it is today. To be more precise it was created at THE tipping point of the industry; arguably THE biggest year in cinematic history: 1977.

Art movies

What does it mean for a movie to be “Art”? What separates an “Art Film” from the big mainstream blockbusters that roll by every summer? Or the pretentious Oscar bait that pompously parades itself through theaters every December? I think “Art” is not in the movie, but in the viewer.

Incubus Review

This week I sat down and watched Incubus. Incubus (1966) is rather special in being one of the very few movies ever written entirely in Esperanto. A language created by Dr. Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof to be incredibly easy to learn and speak. Having dabbled in learning it myself I can attest that it is VERY intuitive and easy to learn, although I haven’t committed enough time to it to become anywhere near fluent. Not only is Incubus interesting for being in Esperanto but it has A LOT of big names before they were famous like: Director: Leslie Stevens (creator of the The Outer Limits), lead actor: William Shatner (Captain Kirk), and cinematographer: Conrad Hall a multi-academy award winning cinematographer whose credits include American Beauty, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Cool Hand Luke. The result of all this is a pretty decent horror movie. It’s clear that the budget for the film was low even by the standards of 1966: the movie was shot in black and white, and what few special effects are primitive at best. What really makes this film stand out, however, is the cinematography, the creative story, and Shatner’s acting.

Some Things About tron

I am a pretty massive Tron fan. Ever since I saw the movie for the first time back in about 2002 I have loved just about everything in the franchise. I tracked down a new in-boxed copy of the spectacular videogame Tron 2.0 (now available on steam by the way), and I even saw the disappointment of Tron: Legacy in IMAX 3D. I enjoyed it too, still disappointing, but very much enjoyable. However I don’t want to talk about Tron: Legacy right now, or even Tron 2.0, I want to say some things I think are pretty neat about the original Tron.

Why would I watch this!?

I recently watched the Evil Dead reboot for the 5th or 6th time, and as an Evil Dead fan, and a fan of horror movies in general, I really started to wonder WHY would I ever go back to this movie so many times if it is infinitely inferior to the other 3 Evil Dead movies?

New Blog!

This blog was a Tumblr blog of mine before I realized that Tumblr really isn't the best place for long winded posts talking about movies I like (or don't like as the case sometimes is). So I decided to move to Blogger which seemed to be a much better choice. Over the next few days I will be copying my old Tumblr posts over to this new blog (there aren't that many), and hopefully they will be much easier to read, comment, and share. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please enjoy my musings.
